Building a Wild Network

What is it?

Building a Wild Network is a county-wide engagement and participation programme designed to connect, equip and empower people across Cheshire to take action for nature recovery.

While awareness of the importance of nature continues to grow, many communities and individuals still face barriers to participating in conservation activity or supporting local nature recovery. The project aims to bridge this gap by creating a strong, connected network of people, organisations, schools and volunteers actively contributing to environmental resilience across Cheshire.
Cheshire Wildlife Trust is leading the development of community-led groups and place-based organisations capable of driving local action for nature. The programme provides training, practical support and educational opportunities that enable individuals and organisations to take meaningful action including habitat management, conservation volunteering and environmental stewardship.

Why is this needed? / Why are we doing this?

Nature recovery cannot be achieved through habitat creation alone. Long-term environmental resilience also depends on building public participation, local leadership and stronger connections between people and nature.

Many communities currently lack the resources, confidence or support structures needed to engage in conservation activity, while younger generations are increasingly disconnected from the natural environment and green career pathways.

This project has been developed to strengthen community capacity, create future environmental leadership and build a culture where nature recovery becomes embedded into everyday life across Cheshire.

What is it going to deliver?

By 2030, the project will deliver:

  • Establishment of five community-led organisations
  • Expansion of the county-wide “Wild Network”
  • Training and support for educators and schools
  • Development of Wilder Schools programmes
  • Volunteer mobilisation across conservation and engagement activity
  • Skills development linked to green careers and environmental education
  • Practical conservation and habitat management opportunities
  • Support for businesses and landowners to manage land for nature
  • Greater community participation in local nature recovery
  • Increased awareness, stewardship and long-term resilience

The programme aims to create stronger communities, more resilient habitats and a county-wide culture that actively supports nature recovery.
